Rui Charnock

Wedding illustrator, Cascais and Estoril

Cascais is 27 km from Rui Charnock's Lisbon studio and about forty minutes along the Marginal, so a Cascais or Estoril wedding carries no travel fee. He draws in ink and watercolour through the day, producing about two finished illustrations per hour booked and handing guest portraits over on the night.

Everything here is aimed at the water, and the water throws light back at you all afternoon. That is the whole brief for drawing this coast.

Travel and logistics

Measured by road from the Lisbon studio to Cascais and Estoril. Drive times exclude traffic; I plan against an hour more than each of them.

Glare off the bay, and what it does to a wash

From about midday the bay acts as a second light source, bouncing up under everything. Faces lose their shadows, white linen goes blue-white, and a wash laid on paper in that light looks two shades darker once you carry it indoors.

So the colour on a Cascais drawing goes down lighter than it looks like it should, and the ink line does more of the work. It suits the place — this coast is a line-drawing coast, all railings, awnings and masts.

Old houses, small rooms

The Estoril and Cascais venues that couples want are mostly turn-of-the-century houses with a terrace bolted onto the sea view. The terrace is enormous and the rooms behind it are not.

That decides where I stand. Indoors I work at the edge with a board, never with a table, because a table in one of those rooms costs a guest a seat.

Wind, and the four o'clock change

The nortada comes up most summer afternoons and it is stronger here than in Lisbon. Loose watercolour paper and an onshore wind do not co-operate, so everything gets clipped down and the sheets get smaller.

It is worth knowing if your drinks reception is on an exposed terrace: that is exactly when guest portraits are hardest, and exactly when moving the table two metres into the lee of the building fixes it.

Twenty-seven km from the studio

Inside the included radius, so no travel line and no accommodation line. Close enough that I will come and look at the venue before the day, which on this coast mostly means working out which way the terrace faces.

Venues drawn in Cascais and Estoril

No venue in this region is named on the site yet. Venue pages go up once there is work from the venue to put on them, which is the whole point of having them — a list of places I would be willing to drive to is not information.

Nearby, and what changes

Couples looking at Cascais almost always also look at Sintra, twenty minutes north over the hill and a completely different climate.

Both sit inside the Lisbon travel radius, and the city itself is thirty-five minutes back along the river.
